   The winner of the 2009-2010 J J Mahoney Memorial Southern History Essay Contest; selected by the panel of judges, Thomas P. Lowndes Jr., James Rembert, and Cory Dunlap; is Joseph Maybank Howell, son of Sam and Lavina Howell of Charleston, South Carolina; his essay on Dixie told of the inspirational qualities and importance of the song and described the origin of the word and the geographical location of Dixie.  Joseph is a Junior this year at Porter Gaud in Charleston. Joseph's cash award and certificate were presented to him at the Camp's Confederate Memorial Day observance by Commander Mikell and Essay Chairman Willson. In addition Joseph received a subscription to the Confederate Veteran magazine.The annual essay contest is conducted by Fort Sumter Camp 1269, Sons of Confederate Veterans to promote the study of Southern History.  

THIS YEAR'S TOPIC

 Commander Mikell has also announced the topic for this year’s essay contest “Secession”. The contest, named in honor of J J Mahoney past member of the Fort Sumter Camp, noted entrepreneur, and a former faculty member at The Citadel, is open to all students from the 9th through 12th grades.
