So now you have your essay question, what's next?

1.    Brainstorm

Relax!  Now that you know the topic, take a moment to sit back and brainstorm.  Determine the length you need your essay to be.  Longer essays will require more brainstorming. Take out a piece of paper and begin to jot down key words that relate to your topic.  For example, if your topic is "How I Would Spend One Million Dollars,"  you might jot down the following:                                       

Charity, College, Boat, and House

2.  Paragraph 1

Develop a topic sentence for your introduction paragraph.  This will allow you to begin to state your purpose clearly in the introduction paragraph.

Topic Sentence:________________________________________

After you have written a topic sentence you must explain it with supporting details.

Supporting points: 

                    a.____________________________

                    b.____________________________

                    c.____________________________

3.  Main Body of Paper

Develop the main body of your paper by using facts, defining, or comparing and contrasting your topic.

Paragraph 2:
State main point one.

Paragraph  3:
State main point two.

Paragraph  4:

Conclusion. This will be a summary of the major points of the essay.
